A year and five months after Mgarr residents were left shell-shocked by the mysterious murder of 40-year-old Meryem Bugeja, the crime is still unsolved and the perpetrator is still on the loose, Sunday newspaper Illum reveals.

Bugeja was initially thought to have died of natural causes, but an autopsy revealed that she had suffered a single blow to the head.

Illum reports that back in 25th September 2012, members of the Civil Protection Department had discovered the woman's lifeless body lying in a pool of blood in her Mgarr home.

After talking with her former husband and neighbours, the police ruled out murder and had thought that she had collapsed to her death due to her low blood sugar level.

But after the autopsy uncovered that Meryem Bugeja suffered a fatal head wound the police were left at their wit's end.

Pathologists had also revealed that the 40-year-old was pregnant with twins. In an effort to identify the perpetrator, police conducted a DNA test on the unborn twins, but since the father was not known, the medical tests were all in vain.

However, 17 months later after the mysterious death, the police are still feeding on circumstantial evidence and with no breakthroughs, the murder of the 40-year-old woman is still unsolved.

We are used to police not solving murders. Maybe the police can tell us how many unsolved murders are still pending. Maybe those murders that were not solved and for some reason or other stamped "Case Closed".
