‘Vast majority’ of university results have been published

The University of Malta (UoM) said in a reaction published today that the “vast majority” of University assessment results had indeed been published. The UoM claimed that there were still “34 results pending out of a total of 4,674”.

Yesterday, the Kunsill Studenti Universitarji (KSU) had expressed its concern over the amount of University assessment results still unpublished only less than one month before the start of the resit session in 20 days’ time.

Such incidents, KSU had insisted, “should be avoided in the best interest of the students studying at the University of Malta”. Finally, it also urged the University administration “to look into the issue and publish the remaining results as soon as possible”.

In its statement, the University of Malta has explained that the deadline of 31 July 2010 was for the submission of results by the academics to the administration, not for the publication of these results.

“These results must then be checked and any queries addressed before publication,” the UoM insisted.

The University students’ council had explained in its statement yesterday how the collective agreement placed the deadline for 31 July for lecturers to submit their results.

KSU is thus apprehensive of the fact that this deadline seems to have been blatantly ignored in certain cases, leaving students from across different faculties still waiting for their results,” it had warned in its statement.

The UoM explained how if many results were received near to or at the deadline, this would mean that these results were published in the first week of August.

The University told students that publication of results was given “top priority” by administrative staff.

For diverse reasons, “a very small percentage of results” still awaited publication and the University administration “is endeavouring to speed up the process”, the UoM’s communications and alumni relations’ office insisted.

On the question of revisions of paper, the UoM reiterated its position that it was “sometimes not possible” to have the results for requests for revision of paper before the start of the September supplementary session.   “This is because it is not always possible for the revisions to be completed during August,” the UoM concluded its statement.

In its statement yesterday afternoon, KSU had explained the past week, it had received a number of complaints regarding study units from various departments in the University for which results had still not been published.

KSU had insisted that with the approaching resit session on 1 September 2010, this situation was creating “an unfair disadvantage for those students not yet aware whether they have passed or not”.

KSU had said it was also aware that an extension had been given for University applications without a late application fee. However, KSU had warned that this “should not be seen as a validation for the lack of publication of results in due time”.
