Louis Grech calls on Commission to provide ‘more updated information’ on infringement proceedings against Malta
The Head of the Labour Party (PL)’s delegation in the European Parliament (EP) Louis Grech has asked the European Commission to provide “more updated information” regarding the awarding of the Delimara Power Station extension contract to BWSC.
In his PQ, the Labour MEP explained how it has resulted from confirmed reports in the press and media “that the Commission has asked the Maltese Government for clarifications regarding the controversial extension of the Delimara power station”.
Grech asked the Commission what had led the Commission “from starting this procedure earlier when any delay might lead to serious consequences for Malta”.
In his PQ, Grech also asked the Commission “to confirm that the questions that it was asking the Maltese Government consisted of an investigation about the possibility that in the granting of the contract for the extension of the Delimara power station, the EU rules on public procurement had been violated”.
The Labour MEP also asked the Commission to declare whether the Maltese Government had replied within the time limit that it had been given.
However, as revealed by MaltaToday earlier today, the Maltese Government had received the Maltese Government’s reply on 5 August 2010, two days after the two-month period for the Maltese Government’s replies following Internal Market Commissioner Michel Barnier’s original missive to Maltese Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg on 3 June 2010.
Grech has also asked the Commission when the Commission was expected to take a decision on this case.
“In view of the importance that this issue has for Maltese citizens, can the Commission give more updated information, especially regarding the replies to the questions asked by the Commission?,” Grech asked.
“Especially after the PL revealed the Commission’s letter, Maltese and Gozitan taxpayers expect the Lawrence Gonzi Government to stop hiding from them”, Grech insisted when commenting on his PQ.
