George Scerri, 39 from St. Julians and father of a nine year old boy, lost his life today at about 6.05pm after he was involved in a traffic accident in Giuseppe Garibaldi Road, Marsa.

The police said in a statement that Scerri was driving a Mitsubishi Shogun down the hill from Luqa towards Marsa when he hit a Toyota Corolla driven by a 65 year-old man of Siggiewi.

After the first impact with the Toyota, the victims car swerved to the left, went up the sidewalk and hit a wall. The impact with the wall was so hard that Scerri hit his head violently on the pillar of his vehicle and died on the spot due to the serious injuries he sustained. Luckily nobody in the other car, a man, a woman and a child, involved in this fatal accident sustained any injuries.

A medical team from Mater Dei Hospital and the Civili Protection were called on the scene of the accident but there was nothing else to do for Scerri. The police had to divert the traffic coming from Luqa towards Marsa.

Magistrate on duty, Dr Charmaine Galea, was duly informed and ordered an inquiry. She appointed Architect Richard Aquilina, Dr Mario Buttigieg and Dr Mario Scerri as court experts together with the Police from the Photographic Section.

District Police led by Inspector Spiridione Zammit is still investigating this accident.

This is the seventh fatal traffic accident so far this year.
