Three foreigners arrested by Police over 1.1 kilogram opium find

Three foreign men were in police custody after they were caught with a total of 1.1 kilograms of prepared opium in two separate finds by the police anti-drugs squad late yesterday night.

The three men detained by the police were two Palestinian nationals – a 30-year-old from Kappara and a 29-year-old from Birzebbugia – and a Sudanese national also from Birzebbugia.

The first find was made late yesterday night at City Gate, Valletta, when 520 grammes of prepared opium were discovered hidden underneath the driver’s seat of the vehicle that the three men were driving.

The second drug find was made later in an apartment at Birzebbugia, where another 580 grammes of the same substance were discovered by the police.

Police sources told MaltaToday that prepared opium could be used as a drug on its own, but it could also be used to prepare heroin.

On duty Magistrate Anthony Vella has set up a magisterial inquiry as prescribed by law. He appointed various court experts to assist him in the investigations on this drug find.

The police were also investigating the drug find.
