The situation on Libya and migration were today discussed during a meeting between foreign affairs minister George Vella and the Italian secretary of state for European affairs Sandro Gozi.

Italy and Malta are the only two countries which have so far resisted closing their embassies in war-torn Libya. The two spoke on the two countries’ efforts at a European level to address the current crisis in Libya.

Noting that Malta and Italy have been left to their devices to deal with migration, Vella praised the Italian cross-border project Mare Nostrum and called on the EU to get further involved.
