18 municipal government offices 'inaccessible'

KNPD chairman says 18 municipal government offices are inaccessible for disabled people.

“While 11 municipal government offices are accessible to people with disabilities, 18 others are not,” Oliver Scicluna, chairman of the National Commission for People with a Disability (KNPD) told Sunday newspaper ILLUM.

Two of the inaccessible officers are in the Marsaxlokk and Fgura police stations. Earlier this week, Scicluna was a guest on the programme Reporter on TVM.

When asked whether there are plans to make these buildings accessible, Scicluna said that he had already discussed this with Renzo Degabriele, the Chief Executive Officer of the Primary Health Care department. He added that most of the required work in these cases is minimal, such as the installation of ramps. This means that there’s no need for structural changes.

Regarding the Marsaxlokk police station, Scicluna said that the KNPD is in talks with the police corp to make it accessible.

“In the coming days, I will meet with the acting police commissioner to discuss this point,” Scicluna said.
