SCM 01 to be inaugurated tonight

The first building of Smart City Malta, known as SCM 01, will be inaugurated tonight by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, Nationalist Party weekly paper Il-Mument reported to as its front page story.

Accompanying this story, spread on four out of five columns, is a huge photo of the completed building.

Il-Mument reported that the 12,000-square-metre building will host offices for those companies that will be operating out of SmartCity Malta.

According to the paper, this investment was “the largest investment that ever took place in Malta with a total of US$ 300 million and was destined to transform Malta into a state-of-the-art ICT and media destination”

The paper explained that Smart City Malta was modelled “on the successes already obtained by Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City and Dubai Knowledge Village”.

Il-Mument explained how after completing the first building, “everything was ready for the construction of four other buildings, two of which will include more offices and the other two destined for retail operations”.

The paper revealed that the tenders for these four new offices had already been issued.

The new buildings would be built next to SCM 01, and the whole area will be known as The Lagoon District.

According to Il-Mument, the construction works for the completion of Smart City Malta “was expected to take eight years”, that is, till 2018.

The paper highlighted the fact that the completed building, as well as the other four buildings, “will be built by Maltese companies with their workers”.

This report was not accompanied by any estimates of the total amount of workers that the project will bring especially after in the past there had been varying numbers.

[According to Il-Mument, the construction works for the completion of Smart City Malta “was expected to take eight years”, that is, till 2018.] Wasn't this supposed to employ 5600 by 2013??

The BIG question is: Are they going to employ MALTESE citizens or import cheap workers from third world countries?
