MEPA 'needs more assistance' in protecting valleys from illegal development

MEPA says enforcement officers reactive to illegal development inside protected valleys

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority says it is unable to take prompt and proactive action against illegal developments that sprout up in valleys and are too well hidden for MEPA officials to notice.

Photos sent in by a reader to sister newspaper Illum show illegal rooms built inside the valley Wied Zembaq, in Birzebbuga, over the past two months. Three enforcement notices had already been issued back in 2005 and 2006 on similar developments in the same valley.
