In 2018, 165 new hunting licenses were issued while 12,913 were renewed.

The information was tabled in Parliament by Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia to a question by PN MP Edwin Vassallo.

Farrugia explained how these licenses allowed one to carry a firearm for the express purpose of hunting. "Hunting licenses entitle one to hunt birds from land, from water and also to hunt rabbits, and a person may be a holder of more than one license simultaneously," he said.

In 2017, 224 new hunting licenses were issued, 59 more than the following year, while 12,925 were renewed.

Farrugia was also asked about trapping licenses but said he could not reply to that question since that was the responsibility of the Wild Birds Regulation Unit, which is under the remit of the Environment Ministry.
