Nine-year long war in Iraq comes to end as last of American convoy leaves Iraq on Sunday morning.

The last American convoy left Iraq early Sunday with 110 heavily armoured trucks and mine resistant vehicles carrying around 500 soldiers.

The nine-year long war, came to an end with the closure of the gate behind the last Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle.

American soldiers remembered the situation back in 2003 and compared to the current situation as Iraqi bases are handed back to Iraqi hands.

America had 239,000 uniformed men and women stationed in more than 500 bases when the war was at its worst in 2006.

In total, 1.5 million Americans served during the war with 4,487 being killed and more than 30,000 were wounded.

More than 150,000 Iraqis were killed according to the independent public database Iraq Body Count since 2003 with four out of five dead being civilians.
