Maltese midfielder Maya Lucia made history and shattered records with the Apollon women's football team on Friday.

In the final match for the cup, the Apollon Ladies won 2-1 against the Aris Ladies, a comeback after losing their previous match to the same opponent 4-1.

Lucia was the only utilised substitute for Apollon, coming on in the second half and providing the team’s most dangerous setup on goal with a last-minute cross to teammate Freda.

The cup final broke attendance records for a women’s match, more than doubling the previous record.

It was also the first time the official men’s AlphaOmega stadium hosted a match between female teams.

The Apollon Ladies ended the season as double winners, securing both the league and the cup.

Lucia signed a one-year contract with Apollon Ladies in October 2025.

Apollon Coach Laurent Fassotte had reportedly been following Lucia since her time with Malta's U-19 national team, where she caught his attention by scoring four goals against Cyprus.
