Gilbert Agius signs for Xewkija Tigers

The news was not well received by various factions of the Valletta support, with numerous fans expressing their disappointment that a Valletta icon chose to end his career somewhere else.

Former Malta captain and Valletta FC legend Gilbert Agius, today signed a contract with Gozitan outfit Xewkija Tigers. 

It is thought that Agius signed a contract till the end of the year.

This is a return to Gozitan football for the former captain of the national squad, having played with Victoria Hotspurs in the early 90s.

Thus, the 39-year old came out of retirement in order to continue his football career. Agius was currently working as a youth coach and Assistant Manager with Valletta FC.

The news was not well received by various factions of the Valletta support, with numerous fans expressing their disappointment that a Valletta icon chose to end his career somewhere else.

The Maltese international was capped for 119 games with the national squad, scoring eight goals. He won the league eight times and won the MFA player of the year three times.

Apart from Valletta, during his career Agius also played for a season with Italian team Pisa.
