Cape Verde stunned World Cup viewers after holding off Spain in Monday’s Group H opener.

The European champions, widely considered among the favourites for the title, were unable to find a goal against Cape Verde.

The result leaves both sides level on points at the top of the group, with Saudi Arabia and Uruguay set to face each other later.

Although Spain controlled much of the possession, they struggled to create clear-cut chances. Their best opportunity of the first half came when Ferran Torres struck the crossbar from close range.

Cape Verde’s goalkeeper continued to frustrate Spain after the break, blocking attempts from both Torres and Aymeric Laporte. Even the introduction of the recently recovered Lamine Yamal failed to provide the breakthrough Spain needed.

Cape Verde defended resolutely throughout and secured a memorable point in their first-ever World Cup match. They nearly capped the occasion with a shock victory, creating a number of late opportunities that threatened an even greater upset.
