The long-awaited trailer to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is finally here - revealing hints of epic battles and scary monsters, as well as an interesting backstory linking back to its 'parent' trilogy - The Lord of the Rings.

In The Hobbit - author JRR Tolkien's introduction to Middle Earth - the bumptuous Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), a Hobbit of the Shire, is plunged into a world of danger and magic after the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) enlists him to help out a band of Dwarves in their quest to vanquish the evil dragon Smaug.

Reluctantly agreeing to head on this perilous journey and leave his cosy 'hobbit hole' behind, Bilbo gets far, far more than he bargained for... and that's not even mentioning how he acquired the fateful 'One Ring'.

It was recently revealed that Peter Jackson aims to stretch out The Hobbit into a trilogy to match his Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings adaptation - using a smattering  of material from Tolkien's rich oeuvre - and in the new trailer, we are teased with both epic battle scenes, as well as some familiar faces from The Lord of the Rings.

Whatever you may think about where this project is headed, one thing's for certain: come December, it'll definitely give The Dark Knight Rises some stiff competition for most-watched film of the year.
