Les Paladins perform in Malta

Tonight at 20:00, the Manoel Theatre is presenting the renowned French baroque ensemble Les Paladins, directed by Jerome Correas, in a concert featuring some music treasures of the Italian baroque period.

The first part of the programme consists of Vivaldi’s  Concerto for 2 Violins in D minor, Op.3, N. 11, from L’estro armonico. It is followed by Nisi Dominus, a setting of Psalm 126, for mezzo-soprano and instrumental ensemble and one of his most famous sacred works. The second part consists of Pergolesi's most famous and last work, Stabat Mater featuring soprano Dorothee Lorthiois and mezzo-soprano Sophie Harmsen. The music director is Jerome Correas.

Jerome Correas is the founder-director of Les Paladins. He founded this ensemble in 2001 with the aim of promoting the Italian dramatic music repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries, thus ranging from Monteverdi and Cavalli to Pergolesi and Vivaldi. The aim is also to specialise in French opera-comique featuring composers such as Gretry, Favart and Duni.

The fact that Jerome Correas has had a successful career as harpsichordist and singer adds a special dimension to the full theatrical impact of the performances he directs.

Thorough research regarding the music scores, together with the expressive and theatrical possibilities provided by the spoken and sung word endow the work of Les Paladins with a special unique quality.

The ensemble has toured to great acclaim and very widely in France and abroad, the latter including several visits to the USA. CDs have been recorded on the Arion, Pan Classics and Ambronay Edition labels. Since last year Les Paladins have been resident artists at the Royaumont Foundation.
