One Direction won big at this year’s MTV Europe Music Awards, taking home three prizes. The boy-band, however, were not present for the ceremony held at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro Arena and accepted their awards on a pre-recorded video.

Katy Perry, 5 Seconds of Summer and Ariana Grande picked up two awards each and host Nicki Minaj won best hip-hop.

Grande was named best female artist and also took the best single prize for Problem.  The 21-year-old also performed her song Break Free from a flying pod while wearing a white mini-dress.

Host Nicki Minaj steered clear of controversy. "I've been learning so much about your beautiful country and culture... I've pretty much become Scottish," she told the crowd.

Best male went to Justin Bieber, who thanked MTV via a video clip
