DESA goes back to Abbey Road

The Beatles will be centre-stage at the third event from the highly successful Pop Culture Series presented by the University’s Department of English Students Association (DESA) on February 9 at Portside Lounge, Sliema from 20:30.

The Pop Culture Series are a number of informal academic events, wherein elements from popular culture are bought together with intelligent and current critical thought.

In this respect, more than 40 years on, the band whose own John Lennon described as being ‘more famous than Jesus’ offers a strong legacy which is worthy of such evaluation and questions. Eric Montfort, Nigel Camilleri, Tony Cassar Darien and Tony Parnis will be present at the event to give their point of view on such topics as the lyrics and music of The Beatles, the public’s perception of The Beatles and The Beatles and film.

The bands Relikc and The VZs will be providing live music for the night.

DESA is currently organisnig a reading campaign which will take place on the university campus, wherein writing workshops, a writing marathon and a book sale will take place.

By means of its own initiation and the public’s encouragement, DESA has found that the cultural events it has organised have been very well received and do in fact contribute to campus life. DESA encourages all student organisations to plan events focused on culture, and increasing opportunity for a better and more active campus life.

Entry is against a €4 donation towards DESA.
