Two men have been charged with drug trafficking, money laundering and multiple related offences.

The accused, Anthony Borg, a 40-year-old residing in Marsa, and Shaun Lee Grech, a 32-year-old residing in Paola, were brought before the Court of Magistrates, where they were, amongst other charges, accused of involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering offences.

The case concerns alleged drug trafficking activities linked to Borg’s residence in Marsa, following a period of police observation and surveillance. During the operation, officers observed a person leaving the area in a vehicle driven by Grech.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of both used and unused syringes, as well as drugs. It was also found that Grech was in possession of 25 drug sachets.

Further searches carried out inside Borg’s residence led to the discovery of drugs, watches of an as yet undetermined value, and several items related to drug trafficking, although the substances found were described as being in minimal amounts. The prosecution also stated that mobile phone data linked to Borg indicates drug trafficking and money laundering activity.

Both accused requested bail, however the prosecution objected. In the case of Borg, the prosecution argued that there are concerns related to his character, noting that one of the charges involves breach of bail conditions.

It was further submitted that Borg has a drug addiction, is unemployed and lacks financial means, creating a risk that he may resort to further criminal activity to sustain his habit. The court also heard that he does not have a fixed address, with a previously indicated address no longer being valid.

In relation to Grech, the prosecution also raised concerns regarding his conduct during arrest, where he failed to obey police orders and struck a police vehicle. It was also submitted that he suffers from a drug addiction and is unemployed, although the address provided is that of his parents.

After considering the seriousness of the charges, the personal circumstances of the accused and the stage of the proceedings, the Court denied bail.

Inspector Alfredo Mangion led the prosecution on behalf of the AG Julian Scicluna. The accused Anthony Borg was assisted by lawyer Jacob Magri while Shaun Lee Grech was assisted by legal aid Thomas Sant.

Magistrate Nadine Lia Sant presided on the case.
