Presiding over the Family Court, Judge Abigail Lofaro decreed the annulment of a couple's one-year old marriage, after both parties stressed that their marriage was the result of "pure madness."

The court  heard how the couple had married at the Tal-Herba Church, in Birkirkara in October 2003, after going out with each other for just a year.

The husband was an avid drinker, and liked going out with his friends, to the extent that even on the day he was to wed, he went out with his friends and admitted to shouting in the bar: "look at me I'm going to get married...and I laughed my head off."

He told the court that hjs immediate doubts on what he was about to do, dawned on him as he entered the church before the wedding ceremony.

Fighting between the couple started as soon as they left for their honeymoon, while the husband continues seeing his friends, and returning home drunk late at night.

But while the wife never submitted any form of answer to her husband's claims in Court, she only submitted her agreement to the separation and annulment proceedings, adding only that she too was never ready for marriage, and that she considered the decision as 'madness.'

Judge Lofaro ruled that the annulment was being decreed on the basis that the couple's marriage was vitiated by a serious defect in judgment, whereby none of the two were ready to accept the obligations and responsibilities which come with marriage.

Good. But will they be allowed to repeat their madness?
