In a judgment handed this afternoon by Mr. Justice Silvio Meli threw out objections raised by Adrian Borg of Borvin Aluminium Limited of Fgura, who claimed that he was give "no reason" why he had to pay-up €218,316.64 to the Tax Department Director General for pending and unpaid VAT.

Borg claimed that he received an official letter from the VAT Department and given two days to pay up.

In handing judgment, the Courts upheld the Director General's replies which revealed that Borg had in fact been condemned to pay the VAT bill by the Criminal Courts in 2011, and could not benefit from any amnesty granted by government.

It also transpired that the department held a series of meetings with Borg and had in fact agreed on a repayment scheme, to which he also defaulted.

The Courts rejected Adrian Borg's claims and validated the Director General's official letter to pay the sum of €218,316 within two days.

Borg could face jail if he does not pay up.
