Murder trial postponed as lawyers ‘busy’ with electoral campaign

A trial by jury over a murder committed in 2005 which was due to start this morning was postponed to a later date, after defence and ‘parte civile’ lawyers are ‘busy’ with their individual electoral campaigns.

A Judge this morning ordered the postponement of a trial by jury after the accused defence lawyer and  the lawyer appearing for the injured party, are standing for the general election, and are therefore busy with their personal electoral campaigns.

Lawyer Simon Micallef Stafrace, who is standing for the Labour Party was to defend 40 year-old Ronnie Azzopardi, known as 'Is-Sufu' of Cospicua, who was to stand trial by jury on Monday accused of murder and four counts of attempted murder when he allegedly planted a bomb in Zejtun in 2005.

Azzopardi is accused of murdering Angela Bondin and the attempted murder of Mary Rose Cassar and her sons Jesmar, 7, Jean Leon, 4, and 20-month old Kevin.

The Cassar's lawyer, Malcolm Mifsud is meanwhile standing as a PN candidate.

The trial is now set to be held on March 18.

ABSOLUTELY agree with rcasha. And the judge thinks it's OK too. Absolutely amazing.

If these individuals think that getting themselves elected is more important than a murder trial, then to me they have proven they are not worthy of being elected.
