Remanded over theft of gold from Mosta home

Josef Buttigieg, 32 of Mgarr was remanded in custody after he was charged with stealing invaluable items of antique gold from an elderly couple’s home in Mosta.

Josef Buttigieg, 32 of Mgarr was remanded in custody by Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona, after he retracted a guilty plea for stealing thousands of euro worth of antique gold from an elderly couple's home in Mosta.

Buttigieg, who appeared unshaved, wearing dirty  jeans and a black hoodie jumper, spent 15 minutes consulting with his lawyer Gianluca Caruana Curran, retracting his intention to register a guilty plea, when he discovered that police were also asking the courts to forfeit a €10,000 bond he had for a previous crime.

Buttigieg was seen trying to calm his weeping partner as Police Inspector Carlos Cordina from the Criminal Investigations Department read the charges.

According to the police, the stolen gold was never recovered, while Buttigieg allegedly smashed the elderly couple's main door when breaking into their home on November 18, 2012.
