Suspended sentence for assaulting science faculty dean

Student gets a suspended jail term for assaulting the Dean of the Faculty of Science during the 2011 graduation celebrations.

Glanville Goodlip, 22, a former University student, was handed a suspended jail term for assaulting the University of Malta's dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Carmelo Sammut, during graduation celebrations on 1 December, 2011.

The graduates had started celebrating at the University when Sammut told them to stop. In return, the accused sounded a fog-horn at the dean's ears. Sammut threw the horn to the floor and blows were exchanged between the two. During the scuffle Goodlip hit the dean with a bottle and continued beating him when the man fell to the floor. The assault was stopped by fellow students who pulled the accused away from the victim.

For the next two months Sammut said he was constantly in pain and had to receive physiotherapy.

The court held that the incident happened in the midst of celebrations which had spiralled out of control. While taking into consideration the accused's clean criminal record, the court had strong words for the student, who neither owned up nor apologised for his behaviour.

In delivering its ruling, the court urged the accused's future employers not to entertain any preconceived opinions about the student due to this case.

Goodlip was handed a six-month jail term, suspended for a year, and placed Prof Sammut under a protection order, against a personal guarantee of €1,000 by the former student.
