St Paul’s Bay witnesses high number of police reports in 2013
The number of police reports recorded at St Paul’s Bay for the first 11 months of 2013 marginally less than double the total number of Mellieha and Naxxar combined.
During the period of January to November of this year, there have been a total of 502 recorded instances whereby the police in the localities of Mellieha, Naxxar and St Paul's Bay have intervened in cases involving disturbances of public peace and order, domestic violence, bodily harm and insults and threats.
The figures were published after Opposition MP Censu Galea asked the Minister for Home Affairs Emmanuel Mallia, during last Wednesday's parliamentary sitting, to inform the House how many police interventions were recorded this year in these localities.
In Mellieha there were 14 reported cases of bodily harm, 25 instances of domestic violence and 51 reported cases involving insults and threats. Furthermore, there were five reports of public disorder, making up a total of 95 cases for the locality.
In Naxxar, the total number of reports stood at 74, with 48 cases of reported insults and threats, 14 on domestic violence and 12 reports on bodily harm and public disorder.
However, the most extraordinary statistics which Mallia produced were the ones involving St Paul's Bay.
In this locality alone, there were an disturbingly high 152 cases of reported insults and threats, an equal 87 cases of domestic violence and bodily harm, and 7 reports of disturbance to public peace and order.
In total, locals of St Paul's Bay made 333 reports - an average of more than 6 police reports every week.
These figures do not include the month of December.
