Shipbuilding worker awarded €125,676 in damages

A former shipbuilding worker who suffered grievous injuries in an incident at the shipbuilding back in 1993 is awarded €125,676 in damages by the Court of Appeal.

The Court of Appeal increased by €25,000 the damages awarded to a former ship building employee who suffered grievous injuries after he fell from a height of five storeys.

Following his incident on 4 October 1993, Raymond Barbara filed against the Chairman and members of the Ship Building Counsel. The First hall of the Civil Courts awarded him €100,977 in damages. However the plaintiff appealed arguing the amount was a pittance.

The Court of Appeal, presided by Chief Justice Silvio Camilleri and Judges Tonio Mallia and Joseph Zammit McKeon, ruled that since the Shipbuilding was closing down, the first court miscalculated the amount.

Barbara’s appeal was upheld and the awarded sum was raised to €125,676.
