A 20-year-old man was arrested yesterday night after he led police on a car chase.

At 11:30pm yesterday evening, police officers from the Rapid Intervention Unit were conducting road checks on Three Cities Road in Bormla when they stopped a Skoda Felicia Combi. However, the driver, a Zejtun resident, reversed the car, hitting a police officer, and drove off at a high speed.

The police said they shot at the car in order to get it to stop but the driver continued to speed away in the direction of Fgura.

The police managed to catch up to man in Hompesch Road after a chase, arresting him immediately. A search of the man’s vehicle found a small amount of cannabis resin and a knife.

The assaulted police officer was taken to hospital where he was found to have suffered slight injuries, while the driver was unharmed.

Duty magistrate Doreen Clarke has opened an inquiry into the case.
