A number of people have been injured after a car struck pedestrians during Liverpool FC’S Premier League title parade in the city centre.
The incident happened just after 6pm on Monday on Water Street, as thousands of fans gathered to celebrate the club’s league title win.
Police confirmed the vehicle involved stopped at the scene and a man has been detained. Emergency services remain in the area.
“We were contacted at just after 6 pm today, Monday 26 May, following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street. The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained. Emergency services are currently on the scene. We will issue more updates as we have them,” a police spokesperson said.
Eyewitness Natasha Rinaldi told Sky News she was watching the parade from a friend’s flat when she heard loud screams from the street below.
“It was so loud. People sounded desperate,” she said. “We looked out the window and saw the car run over people. People started running after the driver and tried to break the car. Then police arrived and tried to push people away.”
The North West Ambulance Service said it is working with police and other emergency teams to assess the situation.
“Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible,” a spokesperson said.
The incident occurred amid scenes of celebration, with supporters lining the streets and red smoke filling the air as the team made its way through the city.
