The Nationalist Party “must” win the 2029 European Parliament and local council elections, Roberta Metsola said on Monday morning.

The European parliament president and MEP was speaking at a coffee morning where Nationalist leader Alex Borg was also in attendance.

“We must win the EP election and the council elections in 2029,” she told attendees.

During the event it was also announced Metsola will be seeking re-election to the European Parliament in 2029.

Metsola has contested on the Nationalist ticket and been elected to the European Parliament since 2013 and was re-elected in 2024. In 2024, she obtained a record-breaking 87,473 first-count votes, equivalent to 34% of all valid votes cast and 80% of all votes obtained by the PN.

Her term as parliament president expires in January 2027.

However, she has not ruled out seeking an unprecedented third term as President, which would make her the first person to hold the post for three terms.

That decision is separate from whether she contests the 2029 elections.
