Spanish trains crash, leaving 39 dead and many more injured
At least 39 people have been killed after two high-speed trains collided in Spain, with the number of casualties expected to rise, a regional spokesperson said.
The two trains from the operators Renfe and Iryo crashed just after 9am between the towns of Mora and Orgaz, south of Madrid, causing two carriages to derail.
Images shared on social media show carriages on their side in a ditch, with emergency services assisting on site.
Rail operator Adif said the incident involved a Renfe and an Iryo high speed train travelling from Madrid to Seville. “Traffic on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed rail line has been suspended following a rear-end collision between two trains,” Adif said in a message posted on X.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he was “shocked by the serious train accident in Toledo” and expressed his “affection, solidarity, and support to all the victims and their families”.
