Malta's financial services sector has registered a 30 per cent growth since the financial crisis, confirming it as one of Malta's main economic drivers, not only in terms of finances but also in terms of employment growth.

Delivering a speech at the fourth annual Finance Malta conference this morning, Malta’s  Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said that the country’s “resilience” was reflected in the double digit growth.

He said that the sector withstood the shock of the financial crisis and registered an increase of  1,000 new jobs created in the past three years.

The Prime Minister stressed that his government was committed towards a strong regulatory regime and strong legislation, adding that these pillars have contributed to rank Malta in tenth place in the financial services sector out of 139 nations within the World Economic Forum.

Lawrence Gonzi said that government was currently working to upgrade the 509 double taxation agreements currently in place.
