More White Storks shot over Malta and Gozo
The public is outraged at the massacre of dozens of white storks which took place yesterday and today. Members of BirdLife Malta have told MaltaToday they have noted two shot birds at Ta' Pinu and Ta' Cenc in Gozo and several others in the south of Malta.
A member of BirdLife Malta described how hundreds of White Storks have been greeted with sporadic gunshots all over the Island. Some Storks were seen with soiled under wings and dangling legs, all injuries suffered from gunshots.
White Storks breed in Central and Eastern Europe and are never ever considered as game. This year Malta opened the hunting season for a limited number of days supposedly for Turtle Dove and Quail shooting. But according to BirdLife this provided an excuse for hunters to shoot protected species.
But the indiscriminate hunting taking place now is in the closed hunting season.
"This is a tragedy and we have to highlight how Maltese hunters are simply not willing to respect the law. Nowhere in the world is the White Stork shot at - considered to be a bird of good omen."
Another BirdLife member promised they would raise all hell with the European Union over the issue.
He added: "These birds just couldn't continue their journey with the lucky ones, just because our politicians don't give a damn about the scum who are still have roaming in our countryside."
