A new stadium is set to be built in Marsa, the Malta Premier League has announced.

The stadium, which will be able to host 5,000 spectators, will be in the UEFA Level 3 category and host matches from the league phase of UEFA competitions.

The project was announced on Monday by the Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment, Byron Camilleri, together with the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Clifton Grima, in the presence of the Malta Premier leadership and the club president

The new stadium is intended to host top-level local games and meet the standards required for international competitions, as set by UEFA, while providing Maltese football with the facilities it truly deserves. The sports complex itself is not limited to football; it is planned as a multifunctional space that can host other sports, including rugby and baseball, as well as various other activities, so it can be used more widely by the community.

“This is an initiative that continues to build on the investment made by the Government in recent years in sports infrastructure because the Government recognises that sport plays an important role not only in competition, but also in society, especially among young people,” they said.

This follows consultation between the Malta Premier League and UEFA, which decided that the stadium would be built with artificial turf due to the Maltese climate. It will also be possible to organise concerts in the stadium.

The stadium will include two opposite stands, suitable for ‘home fans’, and the other for ‘away fans’, with rooms dedicated to VIPs.

The MPL foundation said on Facebook that this has been part of their plans since it was founded two and a half years ago with a targeted completion by the year 2030. The land belongs to the rugby federation, and a new clubhouse will be built for this sport as part of the agreement.

Camilleri stressed that this is another important step in this direction and said that “This Malta Premier project will be another important link in this effort to take our country’s sports infrastructure to another level.” He added that a stadium is not just a building, but a space where people gather and where values such as discipline, unity and fair play are embraced.

He emphasised that improving the public experience is key to attracting more people to local football. He believes modern infrastructure can enhance enjoyment and appreciation of the game. He also reiterated that the goal is to create a welcoming environment where families feel comfortable attending matches, fostering football as a social experience that unites people.

Camilleri noted that, where applicable, such projects can also be supported through the merit-based citizenship framework, which attracts exceptional contributions to strengthen the country's strategic sectors. He mentioned this isn't the first time the framework has benefited the sports sector.

Minister for Education Clifton Grima said, “This project reflects our commitment to continue investing in both our athletes and our country’s sports infrastructure. Today, Malta has a strong reputation in the organisation of international events, and this is the fruit of continuous investment and long-term vision.”

He said the new stadium will be a modern, sustainable facility offering more opportunities for clubs, communities, and youth, referring to it as an investment that strengthens the sports sector and highlights sport's societal value.

The Chairman of the Malta Premier League, Joseph Muscat, said, “This is a project that will help ensure the sustainability of Maltese football as it will make the experience of those attending more attractive. We will have a modern and safe environment similar to modern stadiums abroad, and it will be a genuine outing for the whole family. This project will be the New Home of the Malta Premier, the symbol of Maltese Football.”
