Chris Bonett announces Paola square regeneration
Paola, which is in the transport minister's electoral district will see two projects aimed at improving the locality's main square
Infrastructure Minister Chris Bonett has announced two new projects aimed at regenerating the centre of Paola, a town in his electoral district amid speculation of an imminent election.
The square was subject to controversy after part of its paving started to collapse just two years after another regeneration project.
On Saturday, it was announced that works are already underway in the square, where a new monument dedicated to Antoine de Paule is being installed.
The new project also includes a commemorative plaque marking the 400th anniversary of the town’s founding, as well as bronze maps illustrating Paola’s development over the years.
Existing fountains in the square will be restored, while new elements such as trees in planters and additional benches will be installed.
Meanwhile, the Public Works Department is set to issue a tender for a modern lighting system for the Basilica of Christ the King in the square.
The system will include advanced lighting controls which can be managed via a tablet. The project is expected to take around seven months to complete once works commence.
Bonett said the two newly announced projects represent a combined investment of over €1 million and will continue to improve the quality and character of the locality.
