Vouchers for a national tree-planting initiative have begun to be issued to the first group of beneficiaries who completed the verification process by last week.

The rollout was marked during the “Family in the Park” event at Minden Grove in Ta’ Qali, where beneficiaries collected their trees, a mix of productive and non-productive species to ensure sustainable land use. Project Green officials present at the event educated the beneficiaries on proper tree care and maintenance.

“When we announced this scheme to plant more than 100,000 trees in our country, we had not imagined there would be such strong interest,” Minister Miriam Dalli said, continuing to highlight how the initiative has now entered a new phase, with trees being distributed gradually to all eligible applicants.

Launched in October 2025, the scheme attracted nearly 2,000 expressions of interest. Over 900 of these applicants have reported owning more than one tumolo of land and are being prioritized.

These prioritized applicants, who requested over 45 trees and met all criteria, are eligible to redeem vouchers through partner suppliers and receive trees free of charge, marking the first implementation stage of the project.

In just the first week, vouchers covering approximately 13,000 trees were issued, with more to follow as additional applications are verified.

The other 1,100 individuals who have applied with less than a tumolo of land and have requested fewer than 45 trees will undergo evaluation and will start receiving their vouchers in the following weeks.

This initiative encourages landowners in Malta and Gozo to increase tree cover and adopt sustainable land-use practices, whilst also supporting agroforestry and climate resilience.

Those who have not expressed interest last October may still apply by visiting here.
