New electric vehicles and uniform for RIU officers
The uniform was designed specifically to meet the RIU’s operational needs by using material that offers increased mobility, ventilation, and comfort, while the vehicles will be used for community security in tourist areas
The Malta Police Force has strengthened its forces with six new electric vehicles to be used for community security and a new uniform for its Rapid Intervention Unit designed to improve comfort and efficiency.
The new Hyundai Kona vehicles will operate in tourist areas including Sliema, Swieqi, Cottonera, Marsaxlokk, Paceville, and Gozo. The police hope that the increase in presence will lead to enhanced rapid response, reduced tourism-related crime, and strengthened community relations.
The uniform was designed specifically to meet the RIU’s operational needs by using material that offers increased mobility, ventilation, and comfort. While the black colour gives the RIU its own identity, the design remains consistent with the current uniform of the Malta Police Force.
Minister for Home Affairs Byron Camilleri said this investment forms part of ongoing efforts to ensure that the police benefit from better working conditions, more modern equipment, an improved working environment, and resources that continue to strengthen their daily operations.
Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà said the contribution of the officers themselves in designing the uniform was crucial in ensuring that the final product is practical, comfortable, and suitable for the intensive work carried out by the RIU.
The vehicles were donated by the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) and were financed by funds that are jointly administered by the MHRA, the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism.
