Murderer Adrian Agius found with laptop in prison, internal inquiry launched
Prison authorities confiscated the laptop belonging to Adrian Agius, known as 'Tal-Maksar' during a routine inspection, Home Affairs Ministry spokesperson confirms • Former Judge Antonio Mizzi to head internal inquiry
Adrian Agius, known as Tal-Maksar, was found in possession of his own laptop with direct internet access while being held at Cordin prison, a spokesperson for the Home Affairs Ministry confirmed.
According to the spokesperson, the laptop was found and confiscated by prison authorities during a routine inspection.
Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield appointed an internal inquiry led by former Judge Antonio Mizzi after being informed of the incident.
According to the PN's media arm, Net News, Agius had direct internet access, allowing him to use WhatsApp and download material, which he allegedly distributed to other prisoners.
It remains unclear how Agius was able to access the internet from inside the prison.
The incident was originally flagged in public by former MP and lawyer Jason Azzopardi in a series of Facebook posts. Later, Azzopardi questioned why the minister chose to hold an internal inquiry into the incident rather than order an independent magisterial inquiry, which has the power to seize evidence that can later be used in the criminal court.
Adrian Agius, together with his brother Robert Agius, were sentenced to life imprisonment in 2025 after a jury found them guilty over their roles in supplying the bomb used to kill Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Agius was also found guilty in connection with the 2015 murder of lawyer Carmel Chircop.
