Opposition leader Alex Borg has urged the launch of a magisterial inquiry into the Corradino Correctional Facility (CCF) after scandals rocked Malta’s prison in recent days.

Speaking on NET TV on Sunday, Borg said an internal investigation alone was insufficient to put minds at ease.

The CCF has been the source of controversies, with one of them resulting in lawyers boycotting court on Monday after it accused the CCF of monitoring meetings between lawyers and their clients.

Borg also cited the discovery of a laptop connected to the internet in the prison cell of Adrian Agius, known as Ta’ Maksar. Agius is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of lawyer Carmel Chircop.

The PN leader called for a magisterial inquiry into the prison’s operations, insisting that an independent investigation would establish accountability and identify reforms needed to strengthen prison security.

Borg also addressed wider political issues, including gender representation in parliament.

He claimed that the Nationalist Party had played a role in increasing the number of female MPs and suggested that parliament should finally consider introducing childcare facilities to support members with young children.

Borg also outlined plans to reform the Nationalist Party's leadership structure by creating two deputy leader roles.

Under the proposal, one deputy leader would oversee parliamentary work while the other would manage the party's internal affairs, identical to the roles of the Labour Party’s two deputy leaders.

He added that the party's new shadow cabinet will be unveiled in the coming days.
