Fire breaks out at Skyparks 2 construction site
No injuries were reported and the fire has since been brought under control • Airport operations not affected
A fire broke out at a construction site near Skyparks in Luqa.
The Civil Protection Department (CPD) said that the fire started at Skyparks 2, which is under construction, and that no injuries were reported.
The fire did not affect the airport's operations.
The surrounding buildings were evacuated as a precaution and the fire has since been brought under control.
In a statement, the Malta International Airport (MIA) said that at around 6:30pm, an electrical fire broke out in the construction site, prompting the evacuation of the construction site.
"The Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (RFFS), together with other first responders, responded immediately and, as a precautionary measure while the situation is being brought under control, the SkyParks building has also been evacuated."
The MIA stated that motorists travelling along the airport ring road are advised to follow the instructions of personnel on site, who are directing traffic to ensure the safe flow of vehicles.
Meanwhile, the CPD said that “CPD Firefighters from Fire Stations 1, 3, 4 and 5 remain on scene, together with the Emergency Department of Mater Dei Hospital, The Malta Police Force and Transport Malta.”
