Enemalta has launched procurement for two new submarine electricity cables between Malta and Gozo to meet rising demand and support future development.

"These are substantial investments that will support Gozo's continued development, increased electrification and the integration of more renewable energy," Enemalta executive chairman Ryan Fava said.

The new 33kV cables form part of the company's wider programme to increase capacity and strengthen the electricity network. The nine-year investment plan also includes a higher-capacity connection between the two islands and two new distribution centres.

Each submarine cable will be approximately 8km long. The selected contractor will design, manufacture, install, test and commission both cables. However, the procurement process is still at its first stage, and interested companies must first pass a pre-qualification process before they can proceed to the tender stage.

Energy Minister Miriam Dalli linked the project to the government’s wider energy plans. "This project represents another important step in the implementation of Malta's Energy Shift and our continued investment in stronger, more resilient energy infrastructure," Dalli said.

Alongside the new cables, Enemalta is advancing preparations for a 132kV electricity link, which it says will provide substantially greater capacity between the islands.

The investment plan also includes a distribution centre in Għajnsielem and another serving the Victoria/Kerċem area. Together, the projects aim to meet future electricity demand and support the connection of more renewable energy to the network.
