Wied iż-Żurrieq parker 'Ċikku l-Markiż' passes away

Francis Caruana, known by locals and tourists alike as “Ċikku l-Markiż”, has passed away aged 71.

Ċikku, also known as “Il-Kaptan,” was loved by many who encountered him as a parker at Wied iż-Żurrieq. Francis worked as a parker for over five decades after starting at the age of 13.

Tributes to Francis poured in following news of his death.

On Facebook, Ġiljan Agius joked that although most parkers get on his nerves, Francis’s loss is deeply felt. 

“In a world that seems increasingly beige and grey, we lost someone who gave it colour.”
