Church schools around Malta and Gozo have 1,864 places available for the upcoming scholastic year in the 2027-2028 intake, the Church has announced.

“Some places will also be allocated to children considered to be serious cases, and for which specific regulations apply,” the Church said on Friday. It also said applications will open on 12 November.

These include children who need or will need support from a learning support educator, social cases and children seeking asylum. In Malta, these applications follow a parallel process.

This follows an intake in which applications outnumbered available places. For 2026–2027, the Secretariat for Catholic Education received 4,009 applications for 1,683 places in Malta, while schools on the sister island received 284 applications for 240 places.

For the coming scholastic year, Malta will have 1,624 places, while the sister island will have 240. All applications will be accepted online.

Applications under ‘Criteria 1’ will open on 12 November and close on 19 November 2026. Late applications for this category will be accepted between 26 November and 3 December.

In Malta, this category covers children in Church homes, children of Church school and Secretariat employees, siblings of pupils at the same school and pupils attending Church schools without continuity.

For schools on the sister island, it also includes Year 6 pupils already attending Church schools there, social cases, children seeking asylum and applicants from Għasri. Children applying within this category may attend mainstream classes or need support from a learning support educator.

Other applicants can apply between 28 January and 4 February 2027, with late applications accepted between 11 and 18 February.

In Malta, the largest intake will be at first-year primary, with 662 places. A further 449 places will be available at second-year kindergarten, 322 at first-year secondary and 191 at first-year kindergarten.

Schools on the sister island will offer 96 places at first-year kindergarten and 144 at first-year secondary.

The admission rules, required documents and application dates are available on the Archdiocese of Malta’s website.
