Woman jailed for six months after reluctantly accepting deal
A woman sobbed before a Magistrate, as she had no other choice but to accept a deal brokered by her lawyer, and serve a six month jail term rather than a full year, after she admitted to breaking bail conditions and escaping police custody.
Josephine Grixti, 32 from Marsa, was brought before Magistrate Neville Camilleri under police escort after she failed to appear for her sitting this morning.
She pleaded with the court to understand that she forgot about her summons and promised to appear when called again.
But the Magistrate made it clear that she was already in breach of three suspended sentences, the last one handed down a year ago.
Lawyer Jose Herrera told his client that she had no other way out but to accept a deal to serve six months in prison if she pleaded guilty to breach of bail after being discovered out at night, when she was meant to be in by 8pm.
He warned her that she faced serving a full year in prison besides the penalty for escaping from police custody when she was taken into a police station soon after she was discovered to be in breach of bail.
On handing down judgement, the Magistrate extended her previous suspended sentence for another two years, and ordered Grixti to be immediately escorted to prison to start serving her six month jail term.
