It was a game gone horribly wrong for 27-year-old Domenico Caputo from Sant'Agata sui due Golfi, in Naples, who died yesterday afternoon in a St Julian's hotel swimming pool.

Caputo, a truck driver who travelled to Malta for a week's holiday with friends, died while competing on who could hold his breath underwater the longest.

According to witnesses, the young men were enjoying themselves by the poolside as one of them kept the timings.

While an autopsy on Caputo was expected to be performed today at Mater Dei Hospital, investigators who rushed to the scene said that it was probable that while keeping his breath underwater, Caputo may have exceeded his limits, causing himself a heart attack.

The victim's father, Vincenzo and his mother Maria were informed of the tragedy late yesterday, and were comforted by the town's mayor Leone Gargiulo and parish priest Don Mario Cafiero.

Situated on the picturesque Gulf of Naples, the town of Sant'Agata sui due Golfi has suspended the patron's feast which was scheduled for the weekend.
