Police will await the results of an autopsy which is expected to be carried out this morning, to establish the cause of a woman's death in Mgarr on Tuesday evening.
The woman - said to be a mother of two young children - is of North African origin and married to a Maltese national. She was found dead with a head injury in the bedroom of her residence in Triq ic-Caghaq, Mgarr, which is a stone's throw away from Castello Zammitello.
The body was discovered by the police who said that they made way into the house, finding the woman with blood around her head.
Homicide department Chief Inspector Keith Arnaud, together with Assistant Commissioner Pierre Calleja and other officials were on scene together with forensic experts.
Duty Magistrate Doreen Clarke is heading an inquiry and ordered an autopsy to be carried out.
The whole street was cordoned off and police were seen speaking to neighbours, while other officers were seen leaving the house with bags of evidence sealed with police tape.
According to sources, initial investigations are ruling out foul play, as the woman was said to be suffering from a number of health conditions.
Experts have expressed the opinion that the woman may have hit her head against a chest of drawers as she fell ill, probably a sugar deficiency as she was a diabetic.
