Pensioner admits to assaulting warden, policeman
A 67 year-old man was handed a suspended sentence this morning after admitting to assaulting a local warden and resisting arrest by a policeman.
Alfred Mangion, 68 of Zurrieq was handed a six month jail term suspended for a year, after he admitted to assaulting a local warden who allegedly returned to his street yesterday to book cars.
According to lawyer Peter Paul Zammit who appeared for Mangion, the accused was sorry for the incident, adding that he lost his cool when arguing with the warden, slightly hitting him on the lip.
However, Mangio was also charged with resisting arrest and slightly injuring a Police constable.
Magistrate Miriam Hayman, who presided the hearing and submissions by prosecution and defence, said that although the Court always imposes effective jail terms to persons guilty of assaulting public officials, she was convinced of the circumstances and condemned Mangion to six month jail term, which was suspended for a year.
