Specialised rescue teams, including a canine unit managed to locate and rescue two Maltese nationals, who were found to be "cold, wet but uninjured" after spending the night in freezing conditions on the Welsh mountains.

The two Maltese, identified as Oswald and Carmen Tanti Rigos were reportedly lost yesterday evening, and a search and rescue operation was launched.

A search and rescue helicopter from RMB Chivenor was scrambled to help rescue the two missing Maltese walkers.

The crew from the North Devon base was scrambled at 6am to help join the ongoing search for the missing walkers.

The Sea King helicopter from Chivenor attempted to assist with the search but due to poor weather conditions, the crew was unable to locate the walkers. The helicopter returned to base at 7.30am.

The Maltese were later found by the canine unit, and were later referred to a local hospital for a medical check-up.

The Tanti Rigos are said to have already returned to Malta early this afternoon.
