Inquiry probes trial verdict

Jurors who acquitted a man over charges of importing 21,000 ecstasy pills and half a kilogramme of cocaine under police probe.

The trial verdict that acquitted 25-year-old Matthew Bajada of Santa Venera, on masterminding the importation of some 21,000 ecstasy pills in January 2009.

On 28 January 2013, jurors voted by six votes to three to acquit him of conspiring to deal in cocaine and ecstasy, importing the drugs, possession with the intent to sell and relapsing.

Sunday newspaper Illum reveals that the Attorney General requested an investigation into the verdict after the evidence presented was damning, so much so that his accomplice Joseph Camilleri, 56, of Rabat, had admitted to his involvement last year, and was jailed for 12 years and fined €20,000.
