Scicluna welcomes Ecofin approval of Estonia euro membership

Labour MEP Edward Scicluna has welcomed the decision by EU Finance Ministers to officially approve Estonia's application to join the Eurozone.

The decision to accept Estonia's application was marked by a media event held on Tuesday at the European Commission (EC) which was attended by Scicluna as the European Parliament (EP)'s Rapporteur on the issue.

"I am delighted that the ECOFIN Council has given the final all-clear for Estonia's membership of the Eurozone. This is a just reward for the efforts made by successive Estonian governments and by the Estonian people to have sound public finances,” Scicluna insisted.

"Their achievement, especially in the context of the worst economic and social crisis in a generation, is an impressive one,” the Labour MEP added.

The event also saw key-note speeches given by EU Economic Commissioner Olli Rehn, Belgian Finance Minister Didier Reynders on behalf of the EU’s six-month rotating presidency and Estonian Finance Minister Jürgen Ligi.
