George Abela meets Cypriot President

President George Abela has met his Cypriot counterpart Demetris Christofias.

A DOI statement explained that during the meeting at the Cypriot capital Nicosia, the two presidents discussed various matters, including bilateral issues.

Abela is on a lightning visit to Cyprus on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Cyprus’ independence on 1 September 1960, four years before Malta was also granted its own independence by the British.

Abela was quoted as saying that he pledged his support to the Greek Cypriots so that he could work towards “a united Cyrus with a national recognition”.

After the bilateral meeting, the two sides sat down for an official dinner and a show celebrating the 50th anniversary of Cyprus’ independence.

During yesterday morning, Abela had visited the wall dividing the Greek and Turkish Cypriots’ sides, as well as the village of Lefkara.

Abela had arrived in Malta on Thursday afternoon at Nicosia, welcomed by Cypriot Foreign Affairs Minister Markos Kyprianou and Maltese ambassador to Cyprus Richard Vella Laurenti.

The Maltese President and the rest of the Maltese delegation were expected to return to Malta this afternoon.
